First Week in ICT Class...A new experience

Ice-Breaking Session
1st Session

When i entered into my class room, i met other group members and a new lady. What do you think who was she? She is our new lecturer for the course FCC 113. She introduced herself with the name Ms. Nisa. Soon afterwards we started our class with Ice-breaking Session. It was so funny. Everybody was introducing himself/herself and often there created a serial of jokes with the pronunciation of student's name. It was great that she was so free and soon got mixed with us. Then she talked about the overview of the course outline. Everything about tests and assignments. But we weren't nervous. This is all about 1st Session on last Tuesday (20th October, 2011).

Basic Concept on Computers and The Computer Components
2nd Session

So what happened on the 2nd session? We were asked about the basic of a computer. I saw some of us were advanced and some of us were backwards. But our lecturer made everything easy for us. The 1st question was what is a computer. We said, it's a machine that can do mathematical operations and can do information processing. Next Point was about Computer Operations which include
1) Input
2) Processing
3) Output and Storage that a computer can perform.
In the next slide we learned about the difference between data and information. And also we learned about the basic concept of Hardware and Software. Normally we say, Hardware is the physical parts of a computer and Software is the programs or set of instructions used by the user. These are called Computer Components.

Hardware includes: 1. input devices 2. Output devices 3. System Unit 4. Storage devices 5. Communication devices. Software includes 1. System Software and 2. Application Software

Then we learned about Computer Characteristics and those are - Speed, Reliability, Consistency, Storage, Communication and so on.

Computer Components (Hardware)
Then we were given a class-in activity to do individually and to submit to the lecturer. It was about the basic concept of a computer that what we know and some examples of our thinking.

Number System...An Exciting Concept
3rd Session

Now about the Session 3. It was on Thursday (22th October, 2011). The class was waiting for a new topic to learn about. And it was numbering system. We got to know that there are four types of numbering system.
1. Decimal
2. Binary
3. Octal
4. Hexadecimal

Number System Conversion Table
Computer can only read the binary numbering system. It's base is 2 and includes numerals 0 and 1.
The decimal numbering system has a base of 10 and includes numerals of 0-9.
The octal numbering system has a base of 9 and  includes numerals of 0-7.
The hexadecimal system is a bit different and includes letters and numerals as well. It has a base of 16 and  includes numerals of 0-9 and A-F.

Later we learned how to convert from Decimal to Binary, Octal and Hexadecimal and from other numbering system to Decimal. for some of us it was totally a new topic.

And there was an in-class activity which motivated us in learning how to convert decimal, binary, octal and hexadecimal within one another.

Reflections Finally

After the 1st week finished we learned basic concepts about computer. We learned -

1. Computer is a programmable machine which can not only does computation but also does a lot of things including entertainment, knowledge sharing, information storage and so on.

2. There are two types of computer components: Hardware and Software

3. We learned about the classification of Hardware and Software.

4. We also got to know about Different Numbering Systems and how to convert them from one to another.

5. Finally we also understood this number system helps human's instructions to convert to computer's understandable language.

My experiences in AIU...being a student leader

AIU a great, great university of bright future for those who are the future of their respective society. A university that is providing its students a proper education with a unique type of scholarship. But before coming to this university I have had a lot of troubles and tragedies happened in my life. And now leading a happier life like a student in AIU.

I came from Bangladesh, a country with a huge population of about 160 million. It is a country of happiness and resources. It is also a land of ever green that anybody will ever remember his/her visit to Bangladesh. First time I did not want to leave my country even though while I reached and started to live here I gradually started to recognize Malaysia as a land of green and got a bond with and within the land and its people.

Finally I got admission at AIU but I did not know what is waiting for me at AIU. And when I reached, I met with a number of friendly international students and staffs. From very before I had coped up with the environment in Malaysia and got to familiar with its people and culture. So I tried to use the experiences at IIUM I got to apply here for the benefit of myself as well as AIU. And it worked. From the first moment I got here I started to get respect and dignity from others on the campus as they liked me. It was the consequence of my conducts and manners with them which my previous experiences impacted on. And it is still going on because of my steps and activeness on and off campus.

The Beautiful Albukhary Mosque
Here I am involved in many clubs and societies who frequently are organizing programs, seminars, lectures, activities, projects and presentations for publicity and improvement. Some of the clubs that I am playing active roles are Editorial Club, Welcoming Committee, Cricket club, Peer Buddies, Male Hostel Committee, Student Librarians, Martial Arts clubs. In fact I am responsible in Cricket Club as a President, Peer Buddies as an Event Manager, and Male Hostel Committee as an Environment Minister. These jobs are enriching the treasure of my experiences day by day.

AIU Campus (Centre Square)
As a student of AIU we are not only involved in clubs and organizations but also we are organizing and participating in particular programs and events which are being held here continuously based on local as well as international themes. Recently we finished our Presentation on Bangladesh based on Country Presentation Theme. Even we participated in Country Cooking Activities. The cross-cultural program called Cultural Night has already been held twice after the first intake. We were the active performer as well as organizing committee member there as well. Trips to USM (University Sains Malaysia) and UUM (University Utara Malaysia) have given us much experience and knowledge.

I have taken leadership as my one of the major co-curricular skill to enhance and improve this skill to be a future leader. Although everything comes after the study. So I am very careful about my result and concentration in and outside classes. Here I have already had a number of presentations on leadership and service program activities. Service program activities are unique projects taken for the students to be a humanitarian in the future which is the founder’s, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary philosophy. So here we have formed a bond, a long lasting-never breaking relationship, a family called AIU Family. We are like the children of this family always helping each other, understanding social manner and what a friend can do for another friend. Especially we who are leading the students here are creating the environment for such caring and giving psychology.

In conclusion what is necessary to say that I feel proud being a student of AIU. The respect, dignity and friends I got here is very unique and beneficial for the future of my life. I wish the university soon will cross other top universities as we are working hard on that.

My First Impression at AIU

I came here in the 1st intake of November, 2010 in AIU. I had applied twice here and fortunately got admission last year. It was a moment of great joy & relieving anxiusness about my education career. I was so happy when i got to listened about my admission at AIU. At first I thought that it would be diffficult for me at AIU as i was not familiar with a foreign life out of KL. It is Alor Setar in Kedah, one of northern states of Malaysia, where AIU (Albukhary International University) is situated. I have been in KL for more than 2 years. But what the strange is i was completely able to cope up with the environment at AIU and around the campus area. While i reached here it was like a thrill to me. A beautiful campus beside a beautiful mosque. I was so excited and feeling lucky. then i met a number of students from 26 different countries at that time. it was not a new affair for me though, i became friend with almost all of them. We entered into a family called AIU Family.

Later on I got to know about the founder of AIU, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, a very charitable person whos philosophical view in this age is very rare to find out. When I saw my hostel, I felt I am in a university somewhere in the West. So guess, how facilitated our hostel is!

The staffs also welcomed me well in AIU. And we had had a orientation week program in November. It was great where all the new students and new staffs even got together. I won't forget the moment of 1st Orientation Week. Seriously I have to say this AIU is a very wonderful university compare to a famous University in city area.
